    • EGGs Prop Party

Hey guys! My name is Brandon, although on the interwebs I'm more commonly known as EvilGoodGuy (or EGG for short).

This thread is going to be used as a sort of running dev blog for some of the props that I have created, and will create, for GD and OBM. Similar to Crypts thread, where he started off showing you his dominance in the bathroom.
So you can expect to see old and relatively recent props displayed here over time.

Before we get started with all that I will just give you a quick background of myself in regards to Tripmine Studios, since I'm sure you are all dying to know what kind of weirdo calls himself an egg

I joined the Guard Duty team way back in June of 2010 as a Level Designer.
Although my main role remained as a level designer, it was pretty typical back then (and unfortunately still is sometimes) to be short-handed in the 3D art and 2D art Departments, so I decided to dabble in world texture art and prop modeling.
My texture art progressed quite well, although I was still struggling with prop creation for a while. Regardless of that I learned how to compile models for Source and for a few years was essentially the go-to guy for taking our artists props and getting them out of the modeling software and into the game where they belong.
Don't make me explain why most of the 3D artists did not compile their own models. Trust me, it will give you a headache

In September of 2011 I joined the OBM team as well and continued to expand my texture art and prop art skills until I eventually reached a point where I was deemed worthy by the dev gods of implementing my props into the game; and my skills have increased ever since.

With all that being said, my expertise still lays greatly in level design, so don't expect to have your pants blown off by my props. Although honestly, what you do with your pants is up to you.

      ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anywhoozle, now that all that jazz is out of the way, let's get on to some props!

I honestly don't remember what my first in-game prop was, so here is a random assortment, of which most of the props are extremely old; namely the cinderblock, safety cones, and voltmeter.

I design most of my props to be modular so they can be used in a variety of ways and places. I find that the extra time put in to designing props so that they are modular is worth it because the props can be used so much more than they would be otherwise.

One of the more recent modular prop sets I created was a large set of conduit/industrial pipes.
-There are 4 variations of the set (single pipe, double pipe, triple pipe, and a group of 7 pipes)
-Each variation has 5 skins to choose from for different uses and environments
Skin 0: Typical stainless steel electrical conduit
      Skin 1: Copper piping
      Skin 2: PVC/plastic piping
Skin 3: Ribbed/flex metal electrical conduit
      Skin 4 : Rusty/old steel electrical conduit
-There are currently over 97 total models in the set. Many of those being different lengths of pipe (for performance and ease of use reasons), different corner pieces, and a few being special shapes to conform to specific brushwork in certain maps where the generic pieces will not work.

I have a lot more I could show you, both old and new, but I'm going to spread out my posts here so that I don't reveal everything at once.
Plus I just like to tease you guys

So stay tuned here for more content from me, and let me know if you like to see this sort of thing!

Hey EGG i was wondering if the whole community can send some miscellaneous props and form like a collage to show the people that this game mode is up and running :P
Yo yo, man. I'm not sure I totally understand what you mean.
Are you asking if the community (the fans) can make a collage of the work we (the devs) are showing here on the forums and in media releases?
I feel like it would be a bit redundant and unnecessary, since we are already showing people we are making content by posting it here in our respective dev blog threads and independent portfolios, etc :P
Plus I wouldn't want to clutter up google searches, etc, with unofficial images, which may or may not make the artwork look unprofessionally presented. Know what I'm saying? ;)
A simple paragraph on other websites with links to our pages/official media would do the job just as well, if not better than an unofficial collage of some sort.

But if you really want to, I'm not gonna stop you. I would just ask you post them here on the forums in the chillout-section.

I think he means if out other members could post similar renders as well. That is definitely possible. Every member has possibility to show his work and try to put minimum restrictions on what can our members show. You can definitely expect more in the future and not only from prop modelers :)

As we already mentioned somewhere else, we definitely are not willing to stop with dev. blogs ;)
    • Yo guys,

It's been a week since the first post, so here are a couple renders of my latest prop set.

Fences to replace the HL2 variants!

They are fully modular and come in a variety of lengths (not shown) and 2 different skins. One is a typical greyish skin and the other is really rusty for the dark and dirty sections of the BMRF underground.
They have 2 separate styles of barbed wire posts as well.

    • Hey guys,

Today I'm showing off some ladders I made about 6 or 7 months ago. They are intended to replace the Half-Life 2 ladders in most cases.

      Some stats you might like:
The HL2 models have almost twice as many polys as mine, since they are completely rounded. So there is even less of a performance hit with mine.
There is a variant with and without the wall supports.
There are a total of 6 skins currently.
I also made a complete modular set of safety cages for the ladder, which I might choose to show sometime in the future ;)
As seen in the render, I also made a ladder guard to keep that fatass, Otis, from climbing ladders he shouldn't be.

      Can you show creates?
I'm guessing you mean crates? I don't really take requests :P
But If you want to see some crazy old work of mine you can check out my moddb page, where I have a short video showing some crates I made.

...or do you mean you want to see how I create props? like a timelapse or something?
